Gerbode Valley Loop Hike

Saturday, September 5, 2026, 9:30 AM – 12:30 PMTennessee Valley Trailhead, Mill Valley CAmoderate

About this Adventure

Wilderness Queers is heading out to the Marin Headlands for a 5.3-mile loop through Gerbode Valley, one of the wilder, quieter pockets of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The trail starts and ends at Tennessee Valley and climbs out through coastal grassland ridges before looping back down.

Expect open ocean views, raptors overhead, and a real workout - about 1,100 feet of elevation across the loop. We'll keep a moderate pace and regroup at the high points so nobody gets left behind.

Meet at the Tennessee Valley parking lot at 9:30 AM. The lot fills up early on weekends, so plan to arrive a few minutes ahead. We'll wrap back at the trailhead around 12:30 PM.

Free to attend. No dogs - the Tennessee Valley Trail is closed to dogs. There is no potable water at the trailhead, so bring everything you'll need to drink. Cell coverage is spotty once you climb out of the valley.

Weather forecast

Forecast not available yet - the National Weather Service only publishes detailed predictions about a week out. We pull a fresh forecast twice a day, so this section will fill in as the trip gets closer.

Accessibility

The hike starts from the Tennessee Valley trailhead in the Marin Headlands. The trailhead parking area has accessible parking spots and accessible restrooms, with an asphalt and compacted-natural-material surface from the lot. There is no potable water at the trailhead, so plan to bring everything you'll need before you arrive. Dogs are not permitted on the Tennessee Valley Trail.

The Gerbode Valley loop itself is unpaved fire road and single-track with roughly 1,100 feet of elevation gain across 5.3 miles. The National Park Service does not publish trail-specific accessibility info for this loop. Cell coverage is unreliable past the parking area, so plan for limited service between the valley and the ridges.

If specific access details matter for whether you can join, call the Golden Gate National Recreation Area at 415-561-4700 - they're the authoritative source for trail conditions and accommodations.
